Schein Loft

The Schein Loft occupies the top floor of the 497 GW Building in Soho, New York. Instead of enclosed rooms, its interior unfolds as overlapping zones, creating an open layout that enhances city views through windows on all sides.

Natural materials permeate the space, while a sculptural spine—composed of a thin black metal frame and recycled bogwood veneer—softly defines boundaries. This oakwood, preserved in peat bogs and naturally stained by tannins, adds warmth and texture. Acting as the loft’s main artery, the spine organizes private spaces while facilitating airflow and light distribution. It also supports a suspended ceiling plane that integrates heating, cooling, and air purification.

Branching from this softly illuminated axis are the music room, guest bathroom, and master suite. The master bathroom, seamlessly connected to the living quarters, offers a spa-like retreat with an overflow bath and steam shower.

Gregory Martínez de Riquelme worked on the project during his tenure at Archi-Tectonics New York.
