ARQUINAUT was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Museum to design the outdoor landscaping and pathway leading to the Graham White Building(s) containing the WWI airplane exhibition.
To address the challenge of the distant and inconspicuous entrance, we proposed a three-dimensional landscape sculpture as a landmark and guide.
Inspired by propeller craftsmanship, the sculpture’s structure follows the same layering technique and materials. The resulting sectioned spiral forms a series of portals, symbolically connecting past and present while leading visitors into the exhibition.
The design successfully marks the remote entrance without obstructing the views from and towards the new cafeteria building.
