The project aimed to elevate Busan’s global reputation by developing a world-class waterfront district featuring cultural, educational, commercial, and maritime activities, reinforcing its status as a rising international city. To achieve this, the industrial North Port was efficiently relocated, freeing up approximately 5.3 million square meters of land for a mixed-use development that includes residential, office, retail, public spaces, and entertainment venues. The revitalized waterfront was designed to enhance urban liveability, attract international investment, and position Busan as a major hub in Northeast Asia.
Gregory Martínez de Riquelme worked as the lead architect during his tenure at Gensler New York, overseeing the master plan and urban design strategy. The project won the academic prize in the city’s invited competition and was ultimately realized in combination with another design.
